The Slovak Republic became a UN member on 19th January 1993, shortly after the dissolution of former Czechoslovakia. The Head of The Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the UN in New York is His Excellency Mr. Peter Burian.
In the institutional structure of the UN, during the 2006-2007 term Slovakia featured as an elected member in the Security Council. The Slovak Republic is also represented in the principial judicial body of the UN, the International Court of Justice in Hague. Mr Peter Tomka was appointed one of the Court’s 15 judges on 6th February 2003, when his nine-year term began.
Slovakia’s regional priorities in the Security Council focused primarily on the Western Balkans, Cyprus, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. On the platform of the UN, the Slovak Republic maintains close cooperation with her partners in other organisations of which it is a member, especially the EU and NATO.
Slovakia has traditionally contributed to the UN peacekeeping missions with its troops and military observers. As of May 2008, Slovakia occupied the 44th position in the ranking of military and police contributing countries and was involved in the following UN peacekeeping missions: UNDOF (Golan Heights), UNFICYP (Cyprus) and UNTSO (Middle East).
